The Dash Poem

I read of a man who stood to speak

At the funeral of a friend.

He referred to the dates on her tombstone

From the beginning to the end.

He noted that first came the date of her birth

And spoke of the following date with tears,

But he said what mattered most of all

Was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time

That she spent alive on earth

And now only those who loved her

Know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own,

The cars, the house, the cash,

What matters is how we live and love

And how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard;

Are there things you'd like to change?

For you never know how much time is left

That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough

To consider what's true and real

And always try to understand

The way other people feel.

And be less quick to

show appreciation more

And love the people in our lives

Like we've never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect

And more often wear a smile,

Remembering that this special dash

Might only last a little while.

So when your eulogy is being read

With your life's actions to rehash

Would you be proud of the things they say

About how you spent your dash?

Yeah i think this is vry meaningful:)

A dash thats so tiny,

But signifies that life we had.

Would it have lived up to our expectations?

Or fallen short.

The story :

A story about Arthur Stace, a homeless alcoholic who lived in the Streets of Sydney, Australia.After a conversion to Christianity, quit drinking, and spent the rest of his life writing the word "Eternity" all over the city in yellow chalk.He is remembered in Sydney for his nearly 40-years of colorful lettering, which was designed to prompt people to think about eternity and their own mortality.

According to multiple sources, this story is true.Beginning in the 1930s Arthur Stace spent his early morning hours writing the word "Eternity" in a distinctive cursive style in every doorway, on every street, and major entrance to a public area that he could find in Sydney.For years, the citizens of the city wondered who was writing the "one word sermon" and why.Every once in a while, someone would claim responsibility for the graffiti and the newspapers would print the stories.In 1956, Stace was a member of the Burton Street Baptist Church, where he also served as the janitor and a prayer leader.One day, the pastor of the church, Rev. Lisle M. Thompson, stumbled across Stace while he was writing his chalk message on a sidewalk and the mystery of the "Eternity" messages all over Sydney was solved.Stace said that after his conversion to Christianity, he heard a sermon in which the evangelist said "Eternity! Eternity! On to th topic of my belief.

Or rather, disbelief.

I could preach U a sermon if i felt like it, if i wanted to.

But it would have no meaning,

For i do not believe.

Or do i?

This topic on God, so sensitive, so untouchable in my life.

I believe, for without him, what is th purpose to life?

Thr would be no purpose at all.

Purpose in this life are all given upon by other ppl, by our duties.

To study, to work, to continue life.
But if we look closely, thr is no menaing.

Thr is no point in studying, working or anything at all.

For in th end, we all die.

I'm not being pessimistic, but truth is, life passes faster thn th speed of light.

Rmb? When U were just a kid.

It seems so long ago now.

Before long, U'll find that life has slipped through Ur grasp, and thn, thr is no more.

What lies at th end?

Therefore th idea of God gives Us hope.

This holy being who seems to give Us strength, give Us purpose in life.

But thn i'll wonder, why thn, is thr a God?

Was he created?
Or poof! Did he just appear?

But th idea wihout a God is just as scary.

This scary conflicting of ideas.

Ask me a million questions about God, i could probably answer U.

In a pastorical, politically correct way.

Delve into my heart, and U'll see i know nothing about him.

Maybe th saying is correct,

God is infinite, and we are finite.

He knows everything, and we know nothing.

Maybe th only true way to understand God, is to know nothing at all.

To accept him without questions, without doubt, to cast our sceptism aside.

Thn we can truely understand.

However that is not possible for me.

How do i cast my doubts aside?

Or are these doubts of mine false?

Planted by satan, to mess with my mind.

To believe, we have to let go of our understandings.

To look on from a different perspective, only thn can we see th light.

However, no matter how i try, i do not see it.

I call upon God when i'm distressed, scared and need somebody of something to cast my fears upon.

But when everything is alright, i toss Him aside.

Like some ragdoll all forgotten.

Maybe this is th character of a human, this selfish reliance on God.

And yet he continues to love Us, th unselfish streak of His.

But in th end, this are all thoughts of mine, a game of tug-of-war in my mind.

Who shall win?

I certainly hope not satan.

But i have to choose a side.

For without God we are in th darkness.

But to be in th light, we have to submit whole heartedly to th highest being.

Something that i can nvr see myself doing, my stubboness.

And that is just another nature of Us humans, to see ourselves superior, and being unable to bow down at others feet.

I have utmost respect to those who are able to, to believe in smth they have not seen with such fervour.

Mybe they have been touched by him.

Or are these things all just in th mind.

In a few more decades, all my qns will be answered.

Till that day, i pray for his presence in my life.

To just let me, trust.

Well, moving on, have been reading this book- Th Einstein Girl :D

So far it has been a very good read:D

I love books like this.

Th way th author plays with words, th way i keep wanting to read more, to continue, to know what comes at th ending.

Around 1/4 of th book left to complete :)

Excited.

But shall read another day.
